Chronology of cameras Zeiss Ikon
The first Zeiss Ikon twin-lens reflex camera was released in 1934. It showed the reference 850/16.
From 1936, the shape of the devices is modified, losing part of its originality. It is first of all the new Ikoflex II (851/16) which inherits this new design. Next comes our model presented here, from 1939. It bears the name Ikoflex I (850/16). New model, but identical code number. The same year, a new Ikoflex III (853/16), very advanced, was launched. The previous Ikoflex III becomes an Ikoflex II.
The Ikoflex I is therefore the entry level camera. It comes with a 3.5 / 7.5cm Novar lens and a shutter without apparent name but which is in fact a Compur. This model was manufactured until 1944. Manufacturing resumed in 1946, with the same code, before changing in 1951, to become the Ikoflex Ia (854/16) from March 1951.

Twin-lens reflex camera
The problem of focusing, capital in photography, has been solved in this camera in the most exact and simple way at the same time: the image of the subject is reflected in the final dimensions 6 x 6 cm on a ground glass with a rounded lower surface; this device gives to the sighting image a remarkable clarity down to the angles of view. Focus can be controlled right up to the precise moment of the shutter triggering, which helps to avoid any focus blurring. The taking lens and the viewing lens are coupled, have the same focal length and embrace an identical field. The parallax phenomena are completely suppressed.
The central part of the front wall of the cap can be folded down and constitutes a frame sight.
The taking lens has a distance and depth of field scale.
An exposure table is engraved on one of the walls of the cap.
The unsheathed exterior parts are chrome-plated.
A completely light-tight opaque window counter indicates the number of images exposed.
